I am one of those lucky buggers who have had the opportunity to live in Hawaii(Maui). I know…rough right? But, fret not, I am not there anymore so you can hate me less now.
My Canadian homing beacon proved too strong and I now live back on the amazing east coast (NS). Needless to say my sunny, blue skied, 27 degree (C) February “winter” days are long gone. As most of you fine folks know, old man winter has rolled in with a van-load of masked thugs and taken the northern seaboard hostage the past few months.
One morning last week, while buried in the depths of yet another cold-snap I decided I needed a little extra sunshine in my morning smoothie.
Mahalo Mr. Pineapple.
Back when Lisa and I lived on Maui fresh pineapple was a staple in our weekly rotation. Since moving back to the Great White North it kinda fell off my radar. While loading up on groceries the other day I saw a nice big bag of frozen pieces at Costco and thought “oh heck yes!”.
Here is my winter-blues-beater green smoothie of the week.
Aloha kakahiaka(good morning) Green Smoothie
1 cup of unsweetened, vanilla almond milk
3 cups of frozen super greens (kale, spinach and chard)
2 big scoops of Genuine Health Vanilla Transform+ (my new best friend, full review to follow soon)
1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks
Throw the light stuff in first(spinach, etc) and then add the heavier stuff on top. This helps to push it down incase you don’t have a blender tamper. Pineapple takes a little work to blend up smooth, so be mindful of your poor little blender.
Mix everything up until you’ve got a lovely, green super smoothie, pour and enjoy.
One tip, drink this bad-boy right away. If you let it sit in the fridge for a while it tends to separate a bit which is not so no ka oi.
Since pineapple is a mighty delicious fruit and tends to play on the ‘carbier’ side of the fence this shake is most optimal following a workout if your goal is fatloss. If your goal is just being awesome, drink up whenever you want.
What fun foods do you throw into your smoothies to help beat the winter blahs?
