Somewhere along the way the Western World convinced us that we had to eat sugary carbs for breakfast. When I begin working with a new fat loss client good ole “brekkers” is the first target I put into my crosshairs. This meal alone can be the key to re-programming eating patterns that folks didn’t even realize they had adopted.
Let’s all say this together now, “Food is just food”. So if this is in fact the case, why does it feel so foreign when I suggest to somebody that getting more spinach or kale in their breakfast could really help them out?
I am typically greeted with a face that is a cross between pity and downright sorrow. I can see the wheels turning inside their head on how they are about to tell me that I have a horrible mother and that loving families don’t make each other eat vegetables in the morning. That is cruel and unusual punishment. Next they will offer to bring me for chocolate covered frosted waffles in an effort to re-program my glitch.
Spinach doesn’t care if it is 5am or 5pm. He’ll ride shotgun next to scrambled eggs just as well as he’ll ride shotgun next to a steak at dinner time. He loves you all the time and is happy to help.
Word on the street is that all his pals who hang out in the crisper share a similar outlook on life. Anytime, anywhere.
But JOSH. SLOOOOOWWW down now. I CANNOT eat veggies at breakfast, I don’t have time to prepare them!
It has never, ever, ever been easier to sneak veggies into your life than ever before. Armed with nothing more than a blender, some frozen goodies and perhaps a tub of protein you’ll be ready to rock. Believe it or not, 2, even 3 big handfuls of frozen spinach go almost unnoticed when mixed into a shake with a half cup of berries. You’re loading up on veggies, getting your body fuelled up on healthy vitamins and minerals ANNNNND not noticing it……
Once you’ve mastered sneaking spinach into your blended drinks experiment with other mixed greens like kale, chard, beet-greens and wheatgrass. Each one will offer a unique taste and texture. Be adventurous! If you happen to live near a healthy grocery store (we have one here called Naked Naturals) you may even luck out and see frozen pre-mixed smoothie kits that have a mixture of everything mentioned above. Seriously. You could train a cat to make your veggiful breakfast smoothie at this point.
